The fascination for cars is far from over! And, BMW just gets what we need! So, they came up with the perfect model car for daily use. 6 years after the launch in the market, the i8 coupe are putting a halt to the product life cycles with this 2020 model year. Being a convertible, it allows an opportunity for the passengers to either enjoy the open sky or have an all-season soft fabric top along with efficient soundproofing.
Overview of BMW i8
A hybrid Sports Car is a thing for all of us, isn’t it? The best part is that they are launched with highly better electricity performance and other product qualities. However, the newly launched 2020 BMW i8 is all about looking fast rather than running fast. Yet, the BMW provides a show-stopping entry regardless of its features.
It has a dihedral door system that opens on the hardtop coupe or let us say a convertible roadster. The plug-in power train is robust and highly powerful- moreover, it is quicker than the lesser sports hybrids. It is rumored that you are likely to see one tear around the parking lot than in the race tracks. BMW i8 offers a user-friendly ride with comfortable seats that makes it ideal for daily use. However, it has a limited storage space, and a little compromised cabin- these might be reasons why they cross off this car from their list!
What is new for 2022?
After having the best and yet subtle makeover for 2019, the 2020 BMW i8 lineup is unchanged. The former included the battery technology and the convertible roadster additions.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
BMW comes with a single power train in i8. It complements the turbocharged 1.5 liters three-cylinder gas engine. With a battery pack of 11.6 kWh and other two electric motors, the car is just one of a kind. It is the trio of these power sources that takes the total power to 369 kWh, which is capable of driving on all four wheels. Of course, this is not the fastest super in the area. The i8 has the same light steering that was widely criticized in many recent BMWs. The vehicle has sporting intentions and is actually open to feedback. Even more so, the ride is civil and the bumps on the road are felt, but not too harshly.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The fuel economy ratings for BMW i8 are not so impressive when compared with other hybrids, but it can still be considered better than most sports cars. The roadster delivered about 35 MPGe and went for 22 miles alone on electricity- during the 200 miles highway fuel-economy test.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Even though the BMW i8 focused on design vs practicality- the front seat occupant will not feel all cramped. The i8 Roadster has seating only for two passengers along with a folding top that takes up space by the jump seat pairs in the coupe. It has all the standard interior characteristics- heated power seats and prominent touches of leather. Interior features like cooled seats, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and the lumbar support for passenger seats are not present- not even as options. You might assume that the i8 offers you little and almost negligible luggage or little minimal cubby space as desired by modern life. The rear cargo area is long enough but shallow- it is not like the other mid-engined sports cars. And, there is no storage in the front trunk- and it seems like one can only manage to fit one suitcase inside an i8.
Infotainment and Creativity
The infotainment system of the BMW i8 is similar to the less exotic BMW models. The system setup is really intuitive and has a display of an 8.8-inch touchscreen located at the top of the dashboard. It does offer Apple CarPlay but does not offer any provision for Android Auto in the BMW i8.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
This 2020 BMW i8 has not been crash-tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Of course, the hybrid comes with the standard driver’s assistance technology- but, it does not have blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. However, here are some of the key features that it gladly boasts about:
- Standard Automated Emergency Braking
- Standard forward-collision warning
- Standard front and rear parking sensors
Warranty and Maintenance Charges
As per any other car automaker, the BMW i8 has a standard set of warranties- typical to any luxury automaker. Even more so, the i8 offers a warranty on the hybrid powertrain components for its long-term sustenance. The complementary schedule maintenance makes the i8 different from all other hybrids in competition.
Pricing- Which one is best to buy?
Now, the options might not seem too much, but one can save a little cash to enjoy the open sky rides- and that is only available with the BMW 2020 i8 roadster. And, the rest of the standard wheel drive and one power train, the decision to buy the one for you is already made for you! Every model comes with the top class range of upholstery of leather and good head-up displays with subtle heated front seats along with the Harman/Kardon sound systems- and, don’t forget the Apple CarPlay integration. To spice things up, it comes with the Tera World Package- bringing the ceramic controls, the blue seatbelts, black brake calipers, and an elusive brown interior. However, the exterior colors are not an option- except the Crystal White Paint with a dash of grey or blue accents. Those who are worried about the WOW factor for the 2020 BMW i8 should definitely have a look at the adaptive LED headlights- called Laserlight.
